Jos Daniel Ortega Saavedra (most broadly called Daniel Ortega) was born November 11, 1945 in La Libertad, Nicaragua. He’s been President of Nicaragua since 2007; formerly he was leader of Nicaragua (1979-90), first as Coordinator of the Junta of National Reconstruction after which as president. Ortega was detained for political actions in the age of 15 and promptly joined the then-undercover Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN). During his incarceration, Ortega was badly tortured. He afterwards (in secret) returned to Nicaragua in secret. Ortega’s relationship together with the U.S. was never quite cordial, due to U.S. support for Somoza prior to the revolution. Ortega wed Rosario Murillo in 1979 in a secret service and moved to Costa Rica with her three kids from an earlier union. Ortega remarried Murillo in 2005 to possess the union acknowledged by the Roman Catholic Church. The couple has eight children, three of them jointly.
